Sterling silver sugar box made in 1912 by the Crichton Brothers of London. This piece is an almost exact reproduction of an American colonial sugar box made in 1700 by John Coney. The solid sterling box is a good size and weight. The lid is decorated with orb designs surrounded by textured leaves and the finial is done in a swirling snake form. The front of the box has an openwork lock that is engraved with the dates 1892-1917. The body is done in a paneled form, is chased with designs and is raised on four decorative feet. The underside has the monogram: AGA from AFD.

This box was likely made as an exact copy of a specific American sugar box. The majority of these old boxes were given to major museums. Sometimes the original owners made copies to keep as a replacement. The original would be worth several million today. As far as I know, no American sugar box of this style has been on the open market in over 50 years. This is the first copy I have ever seen in over 30 years. Quite a rare piece, even as a copy.

The lid, underside and front lock are marked with the leopard?s head for London, the lion passant for sterling silver, a date letter r for the year 1912 and a maker?s mark for the Crichton Brothers. The box measures 7 3/4 by 6 1/4 inches, is 5 inches tall and weighs 854 grams or 30.1 ounces.
