One of the most beautiful binding I’ve ever seen— a real work of art. The thick, ornately decorated sterling silver binding measures 5.5 x 4.25 inches (circa 2.5 inches thick), upper cover decorated with 2 raised panels and crown, and 4 inset turquoise-colored cabochon stones (these could be real turquoise, and don’t easily scratch), lower covers with raised designs representing the Twelve Tribes of Israel, original clasp intact (marked “STERLING 925 NIR-CHEN ISRAEL”), spine engraved with gift inscription from the Brooklyn Jewish Philanthropic League: “To Minnie and Paul Polsky On Their 50th Wedding Anniversary, With Love and Appreciation, Jewish Philanthropic League, Brooklyn, Inc., March 20, 1965,” 1,981 pages, text in Hebrew and English, in 2 columns. Very good condition.
Binding has light wear and tarnishing (consistent with age), binding pin on lower cover just slightly out of lower hinge (as can be seen in the last photo, at base of spine, but cover is intact and securely bound. The heavy Sterling Silver covers present a challenge to such a thick binding, but the hinge and clasp are intact), front blank endpaper excised, light wear to textblock at fore-edge.
